Lymphatic Massage

What is lymphatic massage?

Lymphatic massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a specialized, gentle massage technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymph—a clear fluid that helps the body remove waste, toxins, and excess water from its tissues. Unlike traditional massages that target muscles with firm pressure, lymphatic massage uses very light, rhythmic strokes and skin-stretching motions to activate the lymph vessels located just beneath the skin.

Key aspects include:
    • Gentle Pressure: The touch is often described as being as light as the “weight of a nickel” so as not to compress and block the delicate lymph vessels.
    • Rhythmic Movement: Techniques include slow, rhythmic strokes and circular “pumping” motions that mimic the natural contractions of the lymphatic system.
    • Directional Flow: Massage always moves stagnant fluid toward functioning lymph nodes (like those in the neck, armpits, or groin) where it can be filtered and returned to the bloodstream.
    • Sequential Approach: A therapist typically starts by “clearing” the main lymph nodes first to create space for fluid to drain from more congested areas

My focus when using this massage therapy is medical and the effect of it can be strong.

Therefore I recommend to assist your body during this process by taking at least a 30 minute walk to my office and 30 minutes after receiving the therapy, mandatory to increase considerably your water intake on that day and the day after (preferably with added electrolytes) and to consider some supplements (maybe tea) that help your body with flushing out the toxins.

What benefits can this massage have?

Key Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage:
  • Medical Relief: Primarily used to manage lymphedema—chronic swelling often caused by cancer treatments or surgery that damages lymph nodes.
  • Post-Surgery Recovery: Helps reduce inflammation and speed up healing after cosmetic or orthopedic procedures.
  • Chronic Conditions: May offer relief for symptoms of fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic venous insufficiency.
  • Cosmetic Benefits: Popular for reducing facial puffiness, “debloating,” and temporarily improving skin glow by increasing circulation.

Who is it for?

Most people can benefit from this type of massage.
Due to its gentleness, this massage is particularly effective for those dealing with high levels of daily stress.

Safety and precautions:

When booking the appointment, remember to inform me about your medical diagnosis and state of health.
Also, take into consideration that individuals with certain conditions should consult a doctor before a lymphatic massage, as moving this fluid can be dangerous for:
  • Active infections or fever
  • Congestive heart failure or kidney disease
  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Undiagnosed tumors in the area being massaged
