What is Delicate Touch?
One needs to experience this type of therapy to truly understand what it is about. Words feel often incomplete when I talk about this service.
In one sentence, I can say that Delicate Touch is an intuitive form of body therapy that is deeply transformative. It is powerful and yet very delicate – as it is based on presence and a simple touch. It incorporates elements from everything I studied so far and is focused mainly on creating a safe environment, in which the client, can relax and let go of everything that is bothersome or felt as a blockage.
It is touch and psychology in the same session. Like a hug for the soul!
It is a hands-on modality to connect with the body, physically and intuitively, with a painful or sick area and to let whatever is causing the imbalance heal on its own.
It is about connecting with who you really are as a human. It is about wholeness. It’s about bringing balance to your body, mind, emotions and spirit – and experience this level of harmony between all.
It is about letting go of whatever blocks health from existing, it is about giving you the opportunity to reconnect with your inner being and open up to a new level of abundance – in health, joy & peace.
We can address any kind of issues during these therapy appointments.
We practice being present with the body, the emotions and the thoughts. We practice acceptance, allowing and forgiveness.
And believe it or not, it is about getting closer to God and letting Him heal you. I as a therapist, only guide you to these things. I assist you. I create the safe space where your troubles can melt away. Healing is not done by me or some external force – just by your body and God.
My intention is to be a mere witness to the process, a guide who opens the door for you. Someone who strongly believes all problems have a solution and holds a safe & caring environment – which is essential for your mind to relax and let your body & God do the rest.
The science behind the therapy
To fully understand what is going on we have to go deep into neuroscience – specifically electrophysiology and cognitive neuroscience – where research is conducted by neuroscientists, neurologists, and specialized engineers. The study of brain waves – brain states has been of special interest to me.
Brain states are recurring patterns of neural activity, such as alertness, stress, or relaxation—directly command physical responses by releasing chemicals like cortisol or oxytocin. These mental states dictate bodily functions, causing reactions like increased heart rate (stress) or lower blood pressure (calm), ultimately affecting immunity, digestion, and energy levels.
Medicine measures these with EEG mashines. And as you see in the picture, there are 5 key brain states and they each have a certain effect on the body:
- Peak concentration (Gamma) high-frequency neural oscillations associated with intense focus, cognitive processing, memory binding, and peak mental alertness. They are the fastest brain waves, playing a key role in integrating information across brain regions and fostering states of consciousness.
- Stress/Fight-or-Flight (High Beta):When the brain perceives a threat, it releases cortisol and adrenaline, causing increased heart rate, rapid breathing, elevated blood pressure, and heightened muscle tension.
- Relaxed Focus (Low Beta/Alpha):Promotes a calm, alert state, often associated with lower blood pressure and improved immune function.
- Mind-Wandering/Resting (Theta/Alpha):Generally disengaged from external tasks, this state allows for mental recovery and internal processing.
- Deep Sleep (Delta):The brain slows down, allowing the body to restore energy, repair muscles, and reorganize neural circuits.
How does the Mind Affect the Body? Well, by:
- Chemical Signaling:Thoughts and emotions trigger the release of neurotransmitters and hormones that flow throughout the body, altering physiological processes.
- Structural Connection:Research shows that areas of the brain controlling movement are directly linked to networks governing involuntary functions (e.g., heart rate).
- Physical Health: Chronic negative mental states (for ex. depression, stress) can damage cellular components like mitochondria in the brain.
ALPHA BRAINWAVES
The alpha state of mind (8–12 Hz) is a bridge between conscious thinking and deep relaxation, often called a “flow state” or relaxed alertness. It calms the body by reducing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, decreasing stress hormones, and increasing serotonin. Physically, it fosters deep, effortless focus, enhances creativity, and boosts mental-physical coordination. Physiologically, this state lowers cortisol and adrenaline while increasing endorphins, promoting deep, restorative rest for both the body and mind.
Alpha states generally occur when you are awake but relaxed, daydreaming, or just waking up/drifting off to sleep
Key Effects of Alpha States on the Body and Mind:
- Deep Relaxation & Reduced Stress:Alpha waves are associated with a calm, wakeful state that significantly reduces cortisol and adrenaline levels, mitigating stress and anxiety.
- Enhanced Creativity and “Flow”:This state is considered a “sweet spot” for creativity and peak performance, often described as a flow state where deep work occurs with less effort.
- Boosted Immunity & Healing: By lowering stress, alpha waves help the body move from a “fight or flight” mode into a restorative, healing mode.
- Improved Brain-Body Coordination: Enhances the ability to integrate physical and mental tasks, often improving athletic performance or fine motor skills.
- Increased Serotonin: Promotes the release of serotonin, acting as a natural anti-depressant.
- Improved Cognitive Function: Alpha activity helps with learning, memory, and cognitive processing by allowing the brain to switch from active, frantic thought to a more receptive state.
- Mental Well-being: Regular access to the alpha state can alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall mood, also reduces “brain fog” by allowing the mind to be alert yet free from frantic thoughts, fostering better learning and creativity.
- Increased Alpha-Delta Sleep (Occasional):While alpha is normally for waking relaxation, “alpha-delta sleep” occurs during sleep, sometimes related to increased vigilance.
How to Enter an Alpha State:
- Some body therapies like Delicate Touch, Bowen Therapy
- Prayer, Meditation and Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness or meditation is a primary way to boost alpha wave activity.
- Deep Breathing: Controlled, slow breathing can trigger this state.
- Relaxation Activities: Engaging in light, enjoyable activities like reading, light exercise, or simply daydreaming.
- Neurofeedback: Specific neurofeedback training can help individuals learn to increase their own alpha waves.
NEURAL SYNCHRONIZATION
When a person in an alpha brainwave state (8–12 Hz, associated with calm, relaxed, and creative alertness) meets a person in another state—such as beta (high activity/stress) or theta (deep meditation/dreaming)—the most common result is interpersonal neural synchronization, where the brains begin to align and harmonize.
The interaction acts as a form of “constructive interference,” where the calm alpha state can influence and stabilize the higher-frequency brainwaves of the other person.
Here is what typically happens based on the brainwave of the second person:
- Alpha Person meets Beta Person (Active/Stressed)
- The Interaction:The alpha individual acts as a grounding presence, while the beta individual brings high-energy, active cognition.
- The Result:The beta person often slows down, experiencing reduced stress, improved, and clearer communication. The alpha person may help the beta person shift from “fight or flight” to a more “flow” state.
- The Mechanism:Through interaction, their brainwaves tend to sync, typically averaging out at a more balanced, cooperative level.
- Alpha Person meets Theta Person (Deep Relaxation/Dreaming)
- The Interaction:The alpha person is calm and present, while the theta person is in deep, near-dream-state relaxation.
- The Result:This often leads to highly creative, intuitive, and, at times, subconscious-level communication. The interaction is often described as peaceful, empathetic, or “dream-like”.
Key Phenomena of the Interaction
- Brainwave Entrainment:The person with the higher amplitude or more dominant state (often the alpha, as it is a powerful state of calm) can entice the other person’s brain to follow its frequency.
- Increased Empathy and “Flow”:When brains synchronize, both parties often report feeling more “on the same wavelength,” understood, and emotionally connected.
- The “Mirror” Effect:If the alpha person remains calm and non-reactive, the other person often mimics this state, leading to de-escalation.
In summary, a person in an alpha state generally acts as a calming, harmonizing influence, helping to bring the other person into a more balanced state of shared, synchronized awareness.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience provides strong evidence that human beings are biologically hardwired for social connection and interdependence.
Here is how neuroscience views this connection:
- Mirror Neurons and Empathy:Mirror neurons are brain cells that fire both when a person performs an action and when they observe someone else performing that same action. This mechanism allows humans to feel what others are feeling—the neurological basis for empathy and automatic resonance.
- Social Brain Hypothesis:The human brain is profoundly shaped by its social environment. Data suggests that social bonds are crucial for survival, and the brain registers social exclusion as physical pain (Social Pain Overlap Theory).
- Neural Synchrony:Studies show that when people converse or interact, their brain waves can synchronize, creating a literal connection in how they process information together.
- Physical Interdependence:Beyond abstract connection, human brains are designed to interface with others through sensory input (sound, light, touch), making us “wirelessly connected” through communication, as shown in the way our behaviors directly influence the brain activity of others.
Many studies emphasize that our individual well-being depends heavily on our connections with others. And that is where therapy can fill in the gaps in your everyday life.
When you receive therapy with the right specialist, you get access to this state of mind that heals the body. This is characterized by a person who can hold calmness, relaxation, and positive emotions, such as gratitude and optimism, which in the time you are exposed to them, shift your body from a stress state to a restorative, homeostatic state. This allows for improved healing ability and better overall health outcomes. This mindset and state of being, is cultivated by the therapist in order to restore balance in your body, so it can go back to functioning optimally.
Who can benefit from this therapy?
Anyone can benefit from this form of therapy. ^_^
It can be helpful for:
- people who can’t seem to find the root cause of their problems
- who are hurt and have tried everything and nothing seems to work
- people whos body is burdened by stress or chronic diseases
- people who have lost their faith in humanity or God and tend to see the world in a negative way
- people who feel like they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders
- people who feel alone and in need of a compassionate person to support them on their healing journey
- people who have so much anxiety/trauma that they cannot tolerate a classical massage but still miss the presence and touch of another human..
What is a session like?
You will lay on the massage table with clothes on, and I will make sure you feel as comfortable as you can be. Sessions are very relaxing for the patients. Some even fall asleep for a few minutes. My patients all told me that the sessions bring quite a unique feeling of peacefulness, of all is okay, and that it’s heart warming because they haven’t felt that in a long time. When they leave they said that they feel more connected and at peace.
Each session is different. Sometimes we talk and sometimes we can be silent. We adapt to what is.
Sometimes, I will invite you to talk about what troubles you now, to bring the suffering to the surface and we start from there. Other times, that won’t be necessary. it’s important that you know you are free to choose if to say something or not and it will not impact the results.
I usually keep my hands on your shoulders or head, in a gently and comfortable position for you – and sometimes I might, with your permission, put them over the area that hurts. Most of the times it will only be a touch, a gentle presence – not a massage. But at times when the tissue holds too much tension it might be that I go into a delicate massage.
It is a gentle and delicate form of therapy and like most things that I practice, at the same time, it is also very powerful. Very similar to Transformational Coaching, with accent and support on the body.
